Certification: Deep in the Heart of Occupational Health Nursing

Occupational health nursing is the specialty practice that provides for and delivers health, safety and wellness programs and services to workers, worker populations and community groups. The practice focuses on promotion and restoration of health, prevention of illness and injury, and protection from work-related and environmental hazards (AAOHN, 2016). Certification offers value for the certificate holder, employer, and consumer. This presentation will identify values and benefits of certification as identified by the research. The presentation will also discuss the ABOHN’s recent practice analysis and survey results of successful exam takers to identify study tips and helpful resources. Certification pathways will be briefly discussed as well as the process to maintain occupational health nursing certification.
Participants will recognize the value of specialty certification and will apply for certification in occupational health nursing, or if certified, will maintain their certification.
Objectives:
- Identify 3 benefits of certification to the potential applicant(s).
- Describe the requirements to becoming a certified occupational health nurse.
- Educate the OHN on maintaining certification and why it is important.
